ROCKFORD (WREX) — If you are a man who went on a low fat diet to start the new year, it may now be as good for you as you thought.

A new study released by the American Urological Association shows men on low fat diets had lower serum testosterone levels. Studies estimate that between 20 and 50 percent of men in the U.S. have low serum T. About 500,000 are diagnosed with T deficiency annually, or TD. TD may cause symptoms such as decreased energy and changes in mood and cognition.

“If it’s someone of a normal weight and they’re looking at ways to optimize their testosterone level, then I would suggest that a low fat diet may not be the best for them and a non-restrictive diet may be best,” said Dr. Daniel Sadowski, who is a Urologist at Rockford Urological Associates.

Sadowski says if someone who is overweight is effectively losing weight through a low fat diet, they should continue on that diet since weight loss is important to improving testosterone level. He adds that the most important thing is generally healthy lifestyles, which include good diet, and regular exercise, and getting sleep.
