The role that what you eat plays in growing cancer is not debatable, according to the data, Dr. Fung, a nephrologist and leading expert on fasting, says that patients who are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes or suffer from obesity are at a greater risk for 13 forms of cancer, and the one important connection seems to be insulin which is a growth hormone, he says, closely linked to Insulin Growth Factor (IGF-1), and when your cells get this signal that certain nutrients are there, they grow.
Dr. Fung says we have battled cancer on its terms: By combating the growth of cells with radiation and that is done to stop its growth. Instead, he reports that we should use our own strengths, and discover and fight cancer using its weaknesses. The best way to do this is to use your diet.
What to Drink: Green tea, with ingredients that stop cancer
Green tea is very high in polyphenols which are called epigallocatechin gallate, (or EGCG for short), which has been revealed to slow cancer growth, several studies have revealed. EGCG is called a “chemopreventive polyphenol,” which means it fights cancer in many ways.
One is by activating natural death in cells, or “apoptosis” as it is called, which is the orderly cell demise that happens in your body when cells are going to be replaced with newer cells. When apoptosis happens in an orderly way, cancer can’t take advantage of the vulnerable cells. This is not easy since the body replaces around 330 billion cells per day, or around 1% of your cells. When this occurs correctly, it stops cancer from hijacking the cells that are ready to be recycled.
EGCG also signals to your body that energy is low, so it does not give more cell growth. EGCG seems to tell your cells: Don’t grow, burn fat storages instead.
Studies reveal that green tea extract supplements can help with weight loss, leading to better fat burning, and easier belly fat removal. EGCG also decreases your cancer risk, which is a rare thing for a food to have such a powerful result. If you want to add just one thing to your diet to lower your cancer risk, it should be one daily cup of green tea, Dr. Fung says.
