3 “Unfair” Muscle Supplements For Men Over 40

Everyone wants an edge. Whether you are a weekend tennis player or your average weight lifter, everyone wants something that will give a boost during competition. It takes a lot more than pushing yourself to get your ultimate body. You also need to give your body the nutrients it needs to maximize the benefits you get from your work.

We asked fitness experts for their top recommended supplements for exercise. This following three supplements were recommended most.

1 — Protein Powder and Creatine Monohydrate

Protein is the foundation of muscle. If you are doing vigorous resistance training or exercise, you are breaking down muscle fibers and have to have protein to repair them to become stronger than they were previously, says certified nutritionist Hope Prenner. “I greatly recommend supplementing with creatine monohydrate and protein powder, a natural substance within muscle cells that is the first type of energy that the body goes through during difficult exercise,” she says.

2 — A Supplement with Polyphenols

Polyphenols are micronutrients within vegetables and fruits. One of the best of these phytonutrients is ellagitannin, which was proven to lower the delayed onset muscle soreness which normally begins some days after your workout.

“This kind of supplement helps me keep consistent with my schedule and routine. At my age of 41, I am the fittest I have ever been.” A serving of Polyphenols has 20 grams of pea protein; that is only around the max your body can make use of at any one time to support your muscle protein synthesis, as reported by a new study in the Journal of Sports Nutrition.

3 — Vitamin D

Exercise helps to build bone. The force you put on your bones when you exercise causes your bones to get denser. But vitamin D is important for good bone health due to the human body not absorbing calcium without it. “Using vitamin D is a great idea for athletes because it supports bone health, which all people rely on for better performance,” says Diana Clelland, a nutritionist, and diabetes specialist. “It’s said that more than 40% of Americans are now deficient in vitamin D, so it is an important supplement to buy for overall health.” And it is a well-researched item in terms of benefits, something that cannot be said for other dietary supplements.
