Hate to tell you this, but once you are over 40, the risks of getting multiple chronic health problems increases. Your body starts working a bit differently than in your younger years—for example, your organs may not work as well because of cellular damage, and it is common to get problems involving multiple organs together, at the same time.
So you need to adopt even better habits to protect yourself conditions like diabetes, heart disease, back pain, and a lot more.
What is the best way to do this? Eating a better diet, a balanced one. Nutrient deficiencies (like calcium) can cause back pain, and even weaken your muscles. But on the flip side, too many nutrients—even healthy ones—can lead to excess weight and that can cause obesity and stress.
Start eating more of these delicious foods if you are over 40.
1 — Berries
Berries like strawberries, blueberries, blackberries and raspberries are filled with antioxidants.
They are also a great source of vitamins C and A, which might help lower inflammation that can cause skin damage.
So berries are great for your insides as well as your outsides. Antioxidants help stop cellular oxidation, and therefore preserve the health of your cells.
Blueberries are also high in nutrients and low in calories. So they help with weight loss.
2 — Nuts and seeds
Nuts—like almonds, walnuts, and pistachios—on top of chia, sunflower seed, and flax seeds, are very important over 40.
Seeds and nuts have omega-3 fats, and vitamin E, which is a part of maintaining your skin’s elasticity as you get older.
Vitamin E is also an antioxidant that can improve your immunity, helping you to fight away infections.
3 — Fatty Fish
Fatty fish like salmon, tuna, and sardines are filled with omega-3 fats, which have been proven to lower inflammation in aging skin.
They also help your brain to stay sharp, and might even be able to lower your risk of getting Alzheimer’s later in your life.
Omega-3 fats are among of the most vital nutrients inside your body for other reasons too.
Hormonal changes when you are in 40s can raise your risk for many health problems, including heart disease. And omega-3s help you keep a healthy heart and lower this risk.
4 — Leafy Greens
Leafy greens (like spinach and kale) contain high amounts of anti-aging minerals, vitamins and fiber that can guard your cells and DNA.
You can eat leafy greens in your salad, or saute them with garlic and a small amount of olive oil to get a healthy dose.
