All of your food decisions can affect your objectives of looking young and feeling well. Breakfast is also the first meal of the day, so what and how you eat now may set up your day for healthy choices later on, allowing you to continue eating foods that will benefit any anti-aging efforts, such as fiber and antioxidants.
“Breakfast allows you to meet your fruit and vegetable requirements for the day while also providing dietary fiber and antioxidant-rich meals,” Roxana Ehsani, Registered Dietitian, added.
“It enables you to add veggies (peppers, mushrooms, onions, and more) and protein like in omelets,” says Jonathan Valdez, RDN. “It may help you feel younger as well as energetic thanks to vitamin A, protein to create collagen, vitamin C, and other antioxidants.”
So, whether you opt out of it completely or make poor nutritional decisions, you may be losing out on the chance to stay younger. According to dietitians, here are four of the worst breakfast habits that could be aging you.
1 — Drinking sweetened coffee drinks
“Drinking a flavored latte or a frozen blended coffee drink in the morning loaded with sugar might give you some calories from the syrups, milk, and other sweeteners employed, but they won’t provide you with a consistent release of energy over time like a well-balanced meal would,” Ehsani explains. “You’ll most likely get a sugar rush followed by tiredness as a result of the caffeine and sugar, but without consuming anything else, your energy levels will plummet rapidly.”
Instead, she says to pick a light or “skinny” variant and make sure your having more for breakfast than just your morning coffee.
2 — Consuming processed meats that are made with nitrates
Breakfast meats, such as bacon and sausage, are delicious, but they’re not good for you.
“Eating it once in a while is acceptable, but since it lacks fiber, is high in saturated fat, and has nitrates that can put strain on the body over time if not consumed moderately or at all, it may cause aging,” warns Valdez.
3 — Not adding antioxidant-rich foods on your plate.
If you’re eating a breakfast plate that’s packed with colorless food, you’re probably missing out on a lot of vitamins and minerals in delicious, vibrant meals.
Not adding color to your breakfast plate, such as by not including any fruits or veggies, is a significant mistake. “Antioxidants are necessary for helping you avoid disease and extend your life,” says Ehsani.
To increase the amount of food on your plate, add spinach leaves and tomatoes to your egg sandwich, according to Ehsani. If you want something sweet, consider adding a mix of fruits to your waffle, yogurt, or smoothie.
4 — Not having inadequate fluid intake
Hydration not only keeps your skin smooth, but it also transports nutrients throughout your body. “Drink 6 to 8 cups of fluids each day,” advises Valdez. Look to see whether your urine has a slight yellow cast or if it’s completely clear, he advises.
