5 Supplements That Make You Feel Younger

Vitamins and minerals are necessary for a good, youthful appearance, but getting enough nutrition might be difficult. “Even with the best diet, the mix of many factors–including our depleted soils, food storage and transport, genetic changes in traditional heirloom species, and higher stress and nutritional demands as a result of a poisonous atmosphere – makes it impossible for us to obtain all of the vitamins and minerals we require from only what we eat,” says Dr. Mark Hyman. According to specialists, here are five vitamins that help you look younger.

1 — Collagen

Collagen is made in your body, but it decreases as you get older. “Collagen is what helps keep our skin from sagging and giving us that plump, youthful appearance,” explains dermatologist Dr. Ohara Aivaz. “We start to lose collagen gradually throughout mid-twenties. Women can lose up to 30 percent of their collagen production during the first several years of menopause.”

“Collagen peptides help your body recover lost collagen,” said Beth Czerwony, RD. “To help keep you looking a bit younger, they firm and plump the skin. Collagen peptides can aid in the protection of your tendons and ligaments . As a result, they’re worth trying for anybody who suffers from arthritic pain or exercises frequently.”

2 — Vitamin C

Vitamin C is an antioxidant that “is able to neutralize free radicals,” according to Patricia Wexler, M.D. “Vitamin C helps your skin’s natural regeneration process, which helps repair damaged skin cells since it has antioxidant properties.”

3 — Vitamin E

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant that acts as a barrier for cells in your body. It is found in our skin oil (sebum), which makes a natural barrier to help keep moisture in your skin, according to Cleveland Clinic. “Thus, oilier skin surfaces, such as the face, have more vitamin E. And since individuals with oily skin have higher amounts of sebum, they also have greater amounts of vitamin E on their skin.”

4 — Vitamin A (Retinol)

Vitamin A fights free radicals, which Cleveland Clinic states is why it “is essential for healthy and youthful-looking skin.” Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin that is also known as retinol. For women, the RDA is 700 micrograms, while the RDA for males is 900 micrograms.

5 — Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids have anti-inflammatory effects and can help you look younger. “Fish oil is a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids, which are a kind of heart-healthy fat with some powerful anti-inflammatory properties,” said Rachael Link, MS, RD. “Because of its omega-3 content, fish oil is one of the top supplements for beautiful skin since it can help to ease inflammation and protect the skin from damage.”
