A Michigan-based meat company called Alexander & Hornung has issued a recall of 234,000 pounds of processed meat products because of the chance that they are contaminated with listeria.
The United States Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service has stated that the recall is for 17 items that have the establishment number “EST. M10125” on the USDA label of inspection. This does include brands such as Big Y, Alexander & Hornung, Five Star, Butcher Boy, Wellshire Wood, Garrette Valley Farms, The Food Club, Niman Ranch, and Open Nature.
Even though no reported complaints or illnesses associated with the contaminated meat products have been reported and there is no factual evidence that the meat was contaminated when it was shipped, the Alexander & Hornung company decided to issue the recall “just to be on the safe side,” as said in a company statement.
The recalled products were shipped to locations all over the nation and they have dates to sell by between December 2021 and May 2022.
The Food Safety and Inspection Service discussed in a statement posted this week that it is “worried some items might have already been purchased and be in customers’ freezers or refrigerators. People who have bought any of these items are encouraged to discard any and all products that contain the stated sell by dates.”
Foods that have been contaminated with listeria may cause listeriosis, which is an infection that mainly affects pregnant women, older people, newborns, and those with compromised immune systems, according to the FSIS. The symptoms of listeriosis may include stiff neck, fever, confusion, muscle aches, and headaches, it is sometimes preceded by stomach problems.
Again, if you have bought any of the recalled meat items, the FSIS strongly recommends that you throw all of the meat away or bring it all back to the place that you purchased it from.
If you have more questions that are related to this company’s recall, you can call the Alexander & Hornung customer Hotline at 1-866-866-3703. They are open between Monday and Friday during the hours of 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. EST.
